Process is the Product: Michener Art Museum

Role: Creative Strategist · Project Lead · Brand Steward

Client: Kyle Confehr / Michener Art Museum

Project Overview and Objective

When the Michener Art Museum invited Philadelphia-based graphic artist Kyle Confehr to exhibit work alongside Keith Haring: Radiant Legacy, I was brought in as a freelance creative strategist to consult on the full scope of the collaboration. The show, Process is the Product, became Confehr’s first solo museum exhibition and was developed as part of the museum’s initiative to spotlight emerging artists with conceptual ties to established icons.

My role bridged curatorial consultation, production strategy, budget negotiations, and marketing development. From early planning through public programming, I helped shape the artist’s presentation, supported museum relations, and led creative ideation—including naming the exhibition and refining supporting promotional copy.

Strategic Approach

  • Collaborated on pre-installation logistics and exhibition production planning

  • Co-developed the exhibition title and consulted on marketing language for digital and print channels

  • Participated in an on-site walkthrough to support curatorial decisions and narrative placement alongside the Keith Haring exhibit

  • Led payment negotiations using museum financial records and salary benchmarks to ensure fair artist compensation

  • James A. Michener Art Museum Financial Statements Year Ended December 31, 2019

Outcomes & Results

  • Confehr’s first solo museum exhibition, on view from April to October 2022

  • Development of an immersive AR activation integrated into the gallery space

  • Earned press coverage, including MutualArt publication

  • Produced and promoted a community artist panel featuring Jane Golden (Founder, Mural Arts Philadelphia)

Leadership and Collaboration

  • Acted as liaison between the artist and the institution to ensure clarity on budget, scope, and expectations

  • Reviewed and edited the formal engagement contract

  • Partnered with museum staff across marketing, and curatorial departments to support programming and engagement
